My name is Maria Mendes, and I am a diligent fashion design graduate from Middlesex University, set to complete my degree in June 2024. Prior to my degree, I studied and gained traditional skills in ceramics, painting and drawing, cinematography and photography - specialising in jewellery. My journey into fashion design was profoundly influenced by Iris Van Herpen. Her innovative designs challenged my understanding of fashion, revealing it as a profound form of art and expression. Inspired by her groundbreaking approach, I have dedicated myself to creating conceptual garments that merge traditional fabrics with new, experimental materials. Driven by a passion for continuous learning, I have always sought to gather as much education and training as possible to enhance my skills and experience. Working as assistant designer for Lovema in Italy, taught me how to design adhering to a specific brand identity. My experiences have not only honed my technical skills but also deepened my appreciation for the art and craft of fashion design. I am eager to continue learning and growing in this field, bringing my creativity and dedication to future opportunities. In my final collection, I explored the often overlooked and darker aspects of the Golden Age of Hollywood. I aimed to tell the untold stories, through the lens of a fictional character named Lucille, of individuals who, inspired by the allure of fame and the American Dream, embarked on journeys to Hollywood in pursuit of stardom, only to find their dreams shattered. The project concept revolves around the juxtaposition of childhood memories and the harsh realities of adulthood, set against the backdrop of Hollywood. Lucille reflects on her journey from a sheltered childhood to the unforgiving entertainment industry, where dreams clash with the demands of success.
