This collection explores how Black and Brown bodies existing in rural spaces is an act of resistance, Black hiking groups give people of African and Caribbean decent the space, safety, and empowerment to connect with nature despite the barriers that we have historically faced in these spaces. I have explored how the Caribbean front room was a safe space for Jamaican immigrants in postwar Britain by making my garments in furnishing fabrics to bring the indoor safe space into the outdoors. For the print I have looked at flowers found in Jamaica and the Caribbean (rich with beautiful rural space) and have created print motifs with these flowers. With this print idea I have include protest art mediums like spray paint and collage. It is also important for sustainability to be at the forefront of my designing; I have explored repurposing materials, by using old tents and garden umbrellas, using original tent and umbrella panels as pattern pieces to inform my design development.
