Sasha Thompson is a womenswear designer who creates clothing for the introspective and the obsessed. Often inspired by saturnine ideas, she transforms concepts into hypothetical fiction - influenced by music, scenery, or pre-established media. Her designs are edgy yet wearable garments often featuring elements of jewellery and metallic hardware, fusing the hyperfeminine with the macabre. Throughout her teenage years her creative outlet was fine art, primarily portraiture in acrylic, ink and pencil. After developing a keen interest in curating and selling vintage clothing, often spending hours researching 90s goth brands, her focus turned to fashion. She is motivated to create pieces with attention to detail that modern fast fashion companies lack, with her style being best described as dreamy and gothic. Her BA final collection ‘The Railway Arch Confessional’, took inspiration from The Last Shadow Puppets song ‘Dracula Teeth’, with the opening lyric developing into a gothic narrative, incorporating research into religious iconography, horror tropes and female hysteria. The result gave way to an eclectic ensemble of thigh grazing layers of chiffon juxtaposed with sharp victorian roped sleeves, bursting with grommets, rosaries and lingerie-inspired fastenings. During her internship year she worked with alternative London-based brand Sarah Garfield on her Collection 03’ ‘Big Girl’, an experience which would form a rich source of inspiration for her final year studio practice. From the people she met to the fabrics she worked with, the experience changed her perspective of the role of alternative fashion within the industry, and empowered her to lean into her own preoccupations for her third year work.
