Alicia Glen is a mixed-race designer who is part Zimbabwean, English, and Scottish. Heritage Threads is a collection that explores personal identity and culture, as a person growing up mixed-race in the United Kingdom. Her graduate collection features outfits that represent mixed-race people who have grown up in the United Kingdom with multiple backgrounds. This explores how music and street wear can be diversified through fashion and also shed light on ethnic minorities by giving them a platform to flourish and create for people who are willing to experiment with their fashion choices. This collection features hand-drawn African British prints featuring stereotypical British motifs, such as a pint, a Queen’s stamp, London, Underground sign, and a Union Jack flag. A second print was created inspired by the Nottingham Forest away 2023 kit, Trent Bridge and Zimbabwean indigo dye print. This was turned contemporary, by printing white ink onto dark denim. This collection pays homage to African and British identity by looking into merging British and Zimbabwean silhouettes such as the kilt, football scarfs and dhuku. This sends a subtle sense of belonging to mixed-race people in Britain and allows them to fully belong within British society. This in turn, promotes cultural knowledge through fashion and creativity.
