‘TACTICAL THREADS’ is a deeply personal exploration inspired by Amelia Allen’s father’s time serving in the Royal Air Force. Delving into his experience through photo observation, she became fascinated by the structure, details and tones embedded in the designs of the uniforms. Having then explored British military uniforms more broadly, from historical/ vintage elements to modern day design. Allen became fascinated with the precision of functional details complimented by utilitarian hardware. The term ‘TACTICAL’ echoes the military components embedded within the project, also referencing the functional design features used throughout, including the use of genuine British military hardware pieces. ‘THREADS’, at face value, referencing the vibrant, time consuming top stitch thread utilized throughout the collection. Inspiration for colour rooted from the historical, neutral tones used widely in military operations, Allen set on army greens and greys as the foundation layers to her garments, with a bold contemporary twist, a burst of neon lime flowing through the collection. The fluorescent contrast juxtaposes the idea behind traditional, subdued tones of military uniforms. Challenging the notion of camouflage became a key point of inspiration. Designed originally for concealment, Allen explored the ways in which camouflage blends to its environment, by creating her own version and challenging its disguised initiative using the contemporary colour palette. The collection is both a tribute to her father’s service and an exploration of the evolving relationships with functionality, heritage, modern silhouettes and contemporary colour palettes.
