‘Glimpse’ is shaped by two vintage family portraits, taken in the late 19th century in Northern Ireland. These images—quiet, posed and heavy with untold stories—became a starting point for exploring themes of memory, identity and inheritance. I was drawn to the contrast between the stillness of the photographs and the lives that must have existed beyond the frame. Through design, I sought to give those stories movement. The collection also draws inspiration from the rich industrial landscape of the time— specifically, the linen mills that once formed the backbone of Belfast’s economy, and the intricate lines and details of the city’s Victorian architecture. These elements informed my material choices, surface textures and structural forms. I was particularly moved by how these spaces, like the portraits, hold a quiet resilience—evidence of lives and labour that shaped both the city and my own ancestry. Using upcycled materials, I’ve reinterpreted historical silhouettes through a sustainable lens. Bustles, structured corsetry and softened tailoring are layered with delicate hand- beading and textured finishes, creating garments that feel both rooted in the past and conscious of the future. Each look acts as a tribute to the women in those portraits—figures I’ve never met, but somehow know. Their presence shaped the emotional tone of the collection and pushed me to think about fashion not just as clothing, but as narrative, as a memory.
