As a Tailor, Alexandra Grace specialises in traditional bespoke techniques and finishes of structured and fluid Womenswear. As a designer, Alexandra Grace strives for alternative silhouettes that include striking features to compliment classic fabrics. A combination of these elements are used throughout Alexandra Grace’s Graduate Collection, “The Cost of Exposure”. A collection that explores the experiences of vulnerable women in the sex industry, as it aims to showcase the tension and fragility of women’s psyche, after long term exposure to sex work. The Collection explores the attempt at protection through its shapes, silhouettes and details. Ultimately, this attempt at protection is often unsuccessful. Inspired by the lives of Betty Page and victims of The Yorkshire Ripper, this collection tells a story of the hardships of constant exposure in the sex industry. The Collection features a mixture of garments including a feminine tailored overcoat and the juxtaposition of large structures that distort the female figure. There is also a use of stretch material so that tension can be organically created through twisting around the body in comparison to more fluid fabrics that have a sense of tension created through organic pleats that are secured down with hand-finishing techniques. These techniques have been acquired from the Fashion Atelier and Tailoring course at the University for the Creative Arts and internships including Laura Green London.
