My work explores the relationship between fabrics and movement, playing with perception. The concept is inspired by my passion for the sport taekwondo; intrigued by how the taekwondo uniform responds with the movements we perform, observing how the material react to our actions and move with our bodies. This interest in movement and fabric interaction has influenced my style of weaving; I experimented with a variety of yarns exploring the properties to create woven samples that stretch and move, recording how different yarns used in the samples respond to the body’s movement, focusing on stretch points and perception. I've drawn inspiration from kinetic and illusion artists such as Bridget Riley and Alberto Biasi; their manipulation of perception informed my understanding of how to convey movement in fabric by using colour, patterns and structures. A key element of my woven samples involves the use of high-twist yarns, which naturally create stretch and manipulation within the fabric. This approach allowed me to experiment with various tensions and weave structures, investigating how the interplay of these factors can shape the fabric’s behaviour. To support sustainability, I use organic high-twist yarn to create stretch in fabric, avoiding non-biodegradable materials like polyester. I am committed to developing more eco-friendly alternatives for stretch fabrics. My work reflects my ongoing interest in experimental design and exploration of the interaction between fabric and the human body in motion.
