My project is centered on updating the traditional lehenga an iconic garment in Pakastini culture, by incorporating contemporary shape-wear elements along with menswear tailoring and embellishments. This innovative approach aims to fuse cultural heritage with modern fashion, creating a piece that honors tradition while embracing the needs of today's dynamic lifestyle. The lehenga, deeply rooted in history, is often worn during important celebrations and showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of Pakistani textiles. However, its traditional structure can sometimes restrict movement and comfort. By introducing shape- wear, which offers support without the rigidity of traditional corsets, I seek to enhance the lehenga's functionality. This modern adaptation reflects the evolving role of women in society and addresses the growing demand for attire that is both comfortable and stylish. My mother serves as my main inspiration for this project. Growing up, I saw her embody the grace of our cultural attire while balancing the demands of modern life. Her ability to navigate both tradition and contemporary needs deeply influences my design process. Through this project, I want to create a garment that she, and women like her, would find both beautiful and practical. In reimagining the lehenga I also want to ignite conversations about the importance of preserving cultural identity while embracing modernity. This project is more than just fashion; it's a tribute to the strength and resilience of Pakistani women, both past and present. By merging traditional craftsmanship with modern design, I hope to foster a dialogue that honours heritage while looking to the future, making the lehenga a symbol of empowerment and style for today's women.
