Project Statement The rich cultural legacy of Guinea—especially the vibrant customs of Conakry, its capital—serves as the major inspiration for this collection. Guinea’s history is interwoven with a tapestry of ethnic groups such as the Fulani, Mandinka, and Susu, each of whom contributes distinctive artistic traditions that reflect resilience, creativity, and a powerful connection to the land. This collection incorporates traditional Guinean textile techniques, including the vibrant pagne fabrics worn by many of Guinea’s communities, and bazin riche, a hand-dyed fabric often used in ceremonial attire. These textiles, frequently adorned with elaborate patterns and meaningful themes, are central to my designs. I aim to showcase the beauty of Guinean craftsmanship while giving it a modern twist—reinterpreting traditional motifs into contemporary silhouettes. At its heart, this collection seeks to honor the strength and beauty of Guinea. It pays homage to its cultural legacy while creating garments that are both timeless and modern. Through this work, I want to channel the vibrancy, creativity, and resilience of the Guinean people—making their traditions and values visible, celebrated, and relevant within a global fashion narrative. Cowrie shells, too, play a vital role in this story. In Guinea, they symbolize fertility, wealth, and spiritual protection. Once used as currency across West African societies, they continue to hold deep cultural significance, especially in ceremonial attire and jewelry. In this collection, I have integrated cowrie shells into wearable designs—sewing them into garments to form intricate, symbolic patterns. These embellishments pay reverence to ancestral wisdom while offering a modern celebration of Guinea’s cultural identity.
