I see myself as a cultural designer, and a design activist. My work reflects my values and beliefs whilst honouring my Black culture. My designs focus on authentic storytelling to convey meaningful narratives, highlighting my own identity and my Caribbean heritage, whilst hoping that others share my views and can relate to my work, potentially empowering others and forming collaborations with like-minded designers in the future. I would like to embrace the idea of balancing tradition and innovation, using contemporary techniques while being rooted in cultural traditions. “LAND WE LOVE” is my personal homage to my Jamaican heritage. Encouraged by the powerful women in my life, my Grandma, Polly and my Mum, Olivier, these designs focus on the beauty, history and cultural richness of Jamaica whilst also honing in on my personal experiences on family holidays to my Grandma’s house in Jamaica which is seen in the lino print in two of my designs. I drew inspiration from the national bird of Jamaica, the “Dr Bird”, the simplicity of the national flower, “Lignum Vitae”, and the character, “Pitchy Patchy” from a national Caribbean festival called Jonkonnu. All of these elements embody the Island of Jamaica and its dynamic energy and resilience, whilst honouring the stories and strength passed down through generations.
