When I Wake Up is a womenswear collection exploring the psychological and emotional evolution of a woman from childhood innocence to mature autonomy. Rooted in the symbolism of sleep and dreams, the project began with a poetic inquiry: When we fall asleep, where do we go? This question guided research into memory, identity, metamorphosis, and empowerment, forming the emotional and conceptual foundation of the work. I began by studying brainwave activity during sleep — especially the states between awareness and dreaming where transformation occurs. These in-between moments, full of ambiguity and potential, were likened to the cocoon stage in metamorphosis, inspiring protective and sculptural silhouettes. Utility wear played a central role, reinterpreted through a softer, more feminine lens. Straps, buckles, and adjustable elements became symbols of both protection and the tension between strength and vulnerability. The colour palette of navy, black, white, and cream expresses duality: innocence & maturity, softness & structure, darkness & light. . Black & navy are the subconscious & unknown, while white & cream represent innocence & rebirth. My design process focused on silhouette exploration and emotive layering, using volume and cocoon-like forms — bomber jackets, puffed sleeves, and adjustable structures—to express internal transformation. The collection includes eight looks, each representing a phase in the protagonist’s journey. Adaptable and multipurpose, the garments reflect a belief that identity is fluid, always evolving. Each strap, buckle, and layered fabric choice is intentional, symbolising growth, protection, and eventual awakening. This collection, a mix of utility & feminine, is a journey through dreams where softness meets reality & transformation becomes survival. Each piece reflects the growth of a girl into a woman who no longer seeks safety but embraces power within herself.
