Ossify is a connection to my late Granny Ruby through my family photos, providing a deeper understanding of her essence and spirit. My collection is designed to capture her maternal, timeless, and free-thinking attitudes within a contemporary setting. The powerful emotions we capture through images can often be lost unless you take the time to stop and observe, an idea inspired by Jacques-Henri Lartigue’s ‘Album of a Century’ and how it is the narrative throughout the album, which constitutes the ultimate work. I was then inspired by artist Rachel Whiteread and her ability to give presence to negative space, reminding me of how my garments are simply a visual impression of a moment that is suspended between the ‘real’ images and abstract memories. The final garments draw inspiration from partial ‘casts’ that evolved in response to a contemporary audience.
