I work with waste fish skins donated by Moxons fishmongers in East Dulwich, to transform into leather. Whilst fish leather is not a new material, my aim is to contribute in reframing it within the context of contemporary fashion, to explore its untapped potential. This recognises the fabric not only as a by-product, but a material of unique value with a vast range of unexpected applications for fashion. My Fashion MA project is about exploring new techniques for material development and innovation within the context of fish leather. Moving away from my past of sculpting with the leather to create conceptual pieces, I’ve explored a plethora of techniques for flat leather patterns to create practical clothing in an unexpected way. Through the lens of sportswear I have developed a cycling inspired top in fish leather, using perforations to make it stretch. Furthermore, I have collaborated with a range of designers to explore the potential of fish leather further by celebrating their skills through a textile new to their practice. This includes a 3D printed fish leather handbag in collaboration with Oliver Haus as shown in the image.
