My concept is on the loss of identity through the loss of my culture and heritage. Heritage is a significant aspect of identity when questioning yourself. Who am I? Living through your 20s is a difficult period of learning, growing and discovering who you are. As I get older, I question myself more, and progressively become more intrigued to get back in touch with my Romanian culture, to gage and understand the second half of who I am (Half English, Half Romanian). During this process, I reached out to my long lost family members, who are currently living in Romania, (who I have never met/ spoken to) to gage a sense of belonging, and to further understand my culture and in addition my identity. I always like to keep sustainability at the forefront of my designing process. Through getting in touch with my family members, they wanted to help me achieve my designing potential, by the knowledge of Romanian materials. They sent over once used lace table cloths, rugs and folklore costumes, to bring my culture to life through my final designs. Throughout this process and journey of learning who I am, I gathered various research which impacted my design development and process. Looking at specific materials, commonly used throughout Romanian traditional wear, like wool and lace and traditional folklore costumes and giving this modest and conventional attire, I want my collection to exude confidence and beauty when my customers wear my garments. It is targeted for independent women, who know their worth, and are self assured with who they truly are. By using passed down lace materials from my Romanian cousins, I wanted to achieve a momentum collection, and give my garments a vintage, luxury, one of a kind feel, that holds meaning and value. This brief and my design collection means a lot to me personally, it has sent me on a personal journey, finding myself through fashion, when discovering my Romanian culture, on my journey of self discovery.
