“R3: Rest, Recover, Rebuild” explores the concept of the injury recovery process in football as a whole. This collection plays into my love of feature details as well as more submerged and discreet details with a technical purpose. The research process spanned across multiple aspects of the injury recovery process – such as the physiological aspects, recovery timelines, exercises, and equipment all the way to football culture, essential kit, and fan participation. This research helped informed the two different consumers that needed addressing – the professional athlete in need of supportive bespoke recovery wear, and the football fanatic in need of a wardrobe to reflect their favourite activity. For the more technical part of this collection, I delved into the multiple aspects of injury recovery, and I used elements such as compression, kinesiology taping, body mapping and 3D design to develop a conceptual recovery base layer. Essential needs such as movement, ease of getting dressed, and weather protection were important consideration during the development of the capsule collection. Each outfit represents a different stage of the recovery process, where the first outfit reflects the earlier stages of recovery where movement is restricted by pain, swelling and supportive devices such as knee braces. The second and third outfits symbolise the gradual road to recovery and reflects improvement in the rehabilitation through improved movement. The outer layers of the collection are what symbolises the bridge between the players and the fans – showcasing that the need for similar clothing is prevalent for both parties regardless of the role they play during the game or off the pitch. It is also a symbol of the role the fans play to a team’s performance, and how when an injured player has to step off the pitch they merge into a similar position as that of a fan.
