My work is centred around women, thinking about a world where women are not told to hide the weird parts of themselves, what this might look like and what they might wear. My current project, ‘God’s little cow’ which I have named after the direct translation of the Irish word for ladybird, My current work is a celebration of eccentric women and being weird and authentic. My grandmother is an inspiration to me in many ways, she is free spirted which spurs her creativity. She is always collecting things on her walks in the Irish countryside and has a vast knowledge about the plants and wildlife. It’s been important for me throughout this project to think of the women in my life; my friends and my family members. All the women in my life have beautiful energy and lift up everyone around them, this authentic sense of self is what I want to show in my work. For so long women have been told to be quiet and not take up space, all my friends are unapologetically themselves and are the kind of ‘weird girl’ I have been trying to portray in my project. This year I have been given a donation of linen from Ferguson’s to use in my collection. Ferguson’s is a linen factory that has been manufacturing linen in my hometown since 1854. I am so grateful to have been given a selection of fabrics that will make my collection feel so much more personal. I have used a combination of fabrics in my work that may seem unconventional, for example the mix of fur and linen. I feel this portrays this weird, unconventional energy I want to convey. I have used a range of techniques in my collection to achieve a maximalist aesthetic with movement and excitement that aligns with the storyline I have created. This includes embroidery on ETHOS, knitwear on SHIMA and screen print.
