My collection titled ‘Shadow Fold’ takes inspiration from Peranakan style and craft. It explores the vanishing visual heritage of the Peranakans through materiality and shadow-play, combining digital processes with handcrafted motifs from Batik textiles and metal moulds. Design elements include 3D fabric manipulation techniques, which emulate the wrapping and folding closures of the Peranakan dress, along with origami flower applique. Peranakan is understood to mean “born of” or “descendant of”, a cultural identity which suggests a person who is born locally but has mixed heritage from somewhere else. It usually refers to a range of mixed heritage communities born from the melding of cultures with the indigenous cultures of the Malay-Indonesian archipelago. The collection is a contemporary offering of elevated day to evening wear infused with the sensibilities of Peranakan ostentatious style and dress.
