3. My project began by looking at my friends and our style as teenagers. About to leave university, we find ourselves at a tipping point; girls not ready to give up their ripped second-hand clothes but also looking towards an image of womanhood. My clothing references draw on the clothes we used to wear (Edwardian undergarments, hand knitted jumpers and checked shirts) and images of 80s fashion with its exaggerated silhouettes. Inspired by the books ‘Girl Pictures’ by Justine Kurland and ‘Edith’ by Angela Hill, I aimed to explore fabrications that draw on these contradictions – merging outerwear fabrics with overtly feminine silhouettes and boyish shirts in fabricated checked nylons. To explore print development, I also looked to the painters working around 1890 – 1910 including Pierre Bonnard and Mary Cassat. Through combining fabrications and prints I aim to treat my antique and second-hand clothing references with the same reverence, creating clothing with emotionality at its core.
