Handle with Care explores the intersection of sentiment, comfort and burden within heirloom garments. Looking at inherited clothing as a vessel for memory preservation, responsibility and obligation, taking inspiration my own familial heirlooms; my Great Grandad’s smoking jacket and chaps. My Grandma remains the muse and character of my collection: The quiet collector of objects and memories, the embodiment of sentiment - the ultimate ‘passer-downer’ (hoarder?). Building on this persona, Lee Miller’s photography further reinforce the ‘utilitarian woman’ archetype. My silhouettes build from 1940s war time silhouettes: Workwear and uniform, with a particular focus on the boilersuit. Handle with Care is for the new generation of heirloom inheritors. Customers who seek out connection, softness, and value emotional charge with their garments.
