The Voice of the Shuttle is a mixed media book exploring women’s relationship to textiles as memory, identity, and communication. Historically, needlework and dress have allowed women to leave their mark on the world, and provided a shared language and culture through which they created a separate discourse at times when they have otherwise been withheld from print and public discourse. Throughout my research I have created responses through analogue photography, cyanotypes, embroidery, styling, and set design. My hope is to underscore material studies as a crucial part of understanding history and strengthen our connection to past generations of women.
