Her collection, Cheating the Camera, takes its name from a term used to describe positioning oneself unnaturally for the camera to create a more flattering or manipulated image. Inspired in part by the self-portraits of Virginia Oldoini, who carefully staged and controlled her image, the collection explores how luxury aesthetics are reshaped through mass production, questioning the boundaries between exclusivity, imitation, and excess. Working across a diverse range of fabrics, colour palettes, and surface treatments, Saunders develops bold print and experimental textile processes that challenge conventional notions of refinement, embracing visual contradiction and the cultural language of "bad taste" as a deliberate design strategy. Her creative approach combines layered patterns, exaggerated colour palettes, faux fur, and animal prints to produce textiles that are simultaneously playful and provocative. Often associated with ideas of tackiness and excess, these materials and motifs are recontextualised as symbols of artificial luxury, performative femininity, and consumer aspiration. Drawing inspiration from imitation luxury, trend-driven fashion, and contemporary consumer culture, Saunders examines how perceptions of desirability shift once luxury becomes commercially accessible and widely reproduced. Her work celebrates and critiques hyper-feminine aesthetics through ornamentation, theatricality, and excess, using decoration as a means of questioning constructed ideals of glamour and status. Positioned between opulence and artificiality, Cheating the Camera intentionally blurs the distinction between sophistication and vulgarity, inviting viewers to reconsider the cultural hierarchies that define good and bad taste.
