My project is a ready-to-wear collection with a narrative that speaks to current taste as well modern history. I have created a six-look collection with a sketchbook of research, concept mood boards, design illustrations, and textile development. My collection references both British second World War uniforms and a 1940s American circus aesthetic – this alignment nods to contemporary world conflict. For my textile creations, I trialled various samples to build a body of work and figure out the right path for my collections' textiles. This sketchbook will carry a narrative throughout – it tells a story. I have used programs Photoshop to trial colours and fabrics throughout my design process and use of Clo3D to create digital garments. I have created a body of work to a high standard of “luxury fashion.” I researched The Blitz in the United Kingdom- 1940, for an aesthetic understanding. I looked primarily of photographs of the blitz in London, I wanted to capture an emotional landscape, a sense of melancholy which I have demonstrated in my silhouettes, a heavy military feel to the shapes and structures, with finer details reflecting military wear. Details on military garments have a significant impact on the way my collections' outerwear is presented and the muted colours of khaki green, beige, and dulled out muted circus colours – pinks, reds, mustard yellows and navy - create the story of ‘fools sent to war’. Research also focused on the circus in America during the 1940s to add juxtaposition to my concept. I want to show how, in my opinion, contemporary events are like a performance. I want colourful characters, shoved into oversized uniforms, remnants of who they were peeking through. This research into 1940s circus canons inspired my knitwear design, which features a repeating motif of stars and stripes. Overall, I chose these historical eras because I love the combination of oversized uniforms drowning out the individual, turning them into mindless soldiers, alongside the American circus theme - an over-the-top, individual, crazy silhouette, ‘soldiers’ made to work for others' entertainment.
