Raised in the East Midlands, Florence Kelk Whall is a BA Fashion Design graduate from the University of Westminster whose practice is rooted in a passion for vintage workwear, functional clothing, and a bold use of colour. Her work explores the relationship between practicality and playfulness, creating garments that bring character to everyday dress while celebrating thoughtful craftsmanship and storytelling. Florence is particularly interested in designing garments with longevity, creating pieces that are not only made to serve a purpose but also to foster a lasting connection between the wearer and their clothing. Through the use of reclaimed materials and considered construction, she aims to challenge perceptions of durability and value, celebrating garments that evolve through wear and develop their own narratives over time. Her final collection, Tour de Couleur, draws inspiration from the early years of the Tour de France, reinterpreting the charm and resilience of the original riders through playful contemporary design. Deadstock fabrics are transformed through layering, print, and softened finishes, creating garments that appear worn, repaired, and shaped by time. Referencing themes of endurance, vulnerability, and functionality, the collection combines practical silhouettes with reworked details such as classic racing stripes, vintage race lettering, and the iconic 'King of the Mountain' polka dots. These elements celebrate the individuality, determination, and enduring legacy of cycling’s earliest competitors while reimagining their visual language. Throughout her time at university, Florence gained valuable industry experience through internships with S.S. Daley, Charles Jeffrey Loverboy in Production, and Nicholas Daley. These opportunities equipped her with the technical skills, industry knowledge, and confidence to embrace every stage of the creative process, from concept development and textile experimentation to garment construction and product development. Alongside her professional experience, her work was recognised through selection for the Westminster Showcase, receiving a prize for a live industry project with Inditex, and being recognised as a finalist for best portfolios. Together, these experiences have equipped her with the technical skills, creative confidence, and professional insight to thrive within the fashion industry. Looking ahead, Florence hopes to continue developing her practice within the contemporary industry, creating work that combines heritage influences, thoughtful craftsmanship, and a distinctive use of colour with a sense of joy and functionality. Through her work, she aims to design clothing that is both purposeful and expressive, encouraging people to build lasting relationships with the garments they wear.
