Children of Lir or Clan Lir is an old Irish folk tale from my childhood. The three children of the Sea God ‘Lir’ are turned into swans by their jealous stepmother, cursed for 900 years on Irish waters. I was inspired by this story with the fantasy film ‘Peau d’Ane’ from the 1970s, a sparkly, camp tale of a princess who disguises herself in a donkey’s pelt to escape her father. I loved the plush and opulent textures presented in the film’s costume and set that reminded me of the rich aesthetic of the 1st French Empire.
