My graduate collection ‘Suited’ brings together fashion, textile and costume design working in unison to create characters representative of ‘outsiders’ to society. Depicting those who reject, or are rejected by society, dressing their complex and nuanced lives. I explore how clothing as costume can be utilised past how fashion is set out by society to standardise individuals and repress their sense of self. A suit is the pinnacle of this suppression, and I investigate how far I can push what this term really means, re-framing suiting into the context of self-expression. I investigate themes such as rural life, creative expression, femininity, masculinity and queerness, building clothing based each on an ‘unconventional’ way of life. I draw from real life, artistic and cinematic work as well as a strong focus on materiality and historic referencing. My collection aims to direct my practice into a costume context, exploring how clothing interacts with experience.
