My Graduate Knitwear Collection “coupé funk” draws inspiration from contemporary dance, exploring the relationship between movement, body and textile. Through playful but elegant silhouettes, the garments are reflecting the innovative behaviour that occurs throughout contemporary dance, allowing expression to unfold through knitted structures. While taking a modern approach to how shape can enhance a dancer’s body, I have also intwined the silhouettes from traditional ballet costumes that contain a more classical feel. Contrasting light and heavy, I work with yarns like cotton to create the airy feel that dance portrays, while also using Lamb’s wool in felted structures to create something more dominant. The garments perform in an intimate way, having a provocative feel towards ballet norms. “coupé funk” explores a personal connection to dance, that helps the garments capture vulnerability and form an identity.
