My final major project explores how fashion can better respond to real bodies, especially within plus-size womenswear. I’m focusing on creating a capsule collection that moves away from rigid sizing systems and instead works with different body shapes and proportions. The idea is to design clothes that feel adaptable, comfortable, and expressive, rather than restrictive. A big part of my concept is inspired by brutalist architecture. I’m interested in its strong shapes, structure, and raw honesty, and I translate that into garments through bold silhouettes, folding, layering, and constructed forms. At the same time, I balance this with softer elements like draping and texture, so the pieces still feel wearable and flattering on the body. The collection is designed to be versatile, with garments that can be mixed and matched across both casual and formal settings. I’m also exploring adjustability, giving the wearer some control over fit through ties, folds, and construction techniques. This allows the clothing to adapt to different bodies and preferences rather than forcing a fixed shape. Technically, I’m combining traditional methods like draping, toiling, and pattern cutting with digital tools such as 3D body scanning and CLO 3D. This helps me better understand body proportions and experiment with fit and form more accurately. I’m working specifically with a UK size 18 as a base to centre plus-size bodies in the design process.
