Asal-usul is a word in Malay language, meaning: from where someone belongs, one’s root. In this collection, I am representing myself through a diverse cultural aspect, looking at the food and panorama of Malaysia. ‘Asal-Usul’ focuses on the 1950s to early 1960s silhouette, as the beauty of postcolonial Malaysia. After getting its independence in 1957, Malaysia saw a big Western influence, in fashion, and people started dressing bolder. The collection merges this with 1950s Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’ which also has an element of breaking free. The muse for this collection is Malaysia’s national treasure and legendary artist Puan Sri Saloma.
