Sparked by the current economic climate in the UK/Ireland and the ever growing Heritage Crafts list of endangered skills, The Seeds of Time explores the industrial revolution and its effects on agricultural industries and workers. As technology advanced, agricultural work became automated, reducing the need for manual labour; leading to lower wages and the mass migration of farmers to urban environments. In response, agricultural workers revolted, destroying machinery and setting fire to farmland. The collection portrays this struggle through the use of period accurate workwear detailing warped with aristocratic dress silhouettes. Material choice was very important throughout the project, in order to minimise my environmental impact and pay homage to the materials which for centuries protected the agricultural workers of the UK; all materials are sourced from second hand clothing, paying homage to the previous owners, documented in the wear. Garments from the Victorian era and prior often pieced materials together from scraps due to the immense amount of effort that went into producing them, echoed in the construction.
