I approach fashion as both a historical reflection and a personal exploration of identity, questioning how and why I exist geographically and culturally. My work highlights themes of resilience, alienation, and the preservation of dual identity while honouring those who sacrificed everything to build a new life. “Archive your stories, yesterday, today and forever.” – Akinola Davies Jr, BAFTA Winner (2026). Through my work, I share the stories of my parents’ origins and the reasons they were forced to leave, combining fashion with traces of the past hidden within layers of fabric. Drawing inspiration from military wear and my Vietnamese and Chinese heritage, I transform traditional garments into abstract silhouettes through rough and distressed textures. My narratives develop through the drape process, representing the journey of a refugee. Using bamboo to shape the drape imitates junk boat sails, a signifier connected to Vietnamese refugees known as the ‘Boat People’. This material reflects the instability and movement of collapsing boats, referencing my father’s journey to safety. My practice combines fashion with cultural and historical storytelling to communicate experiences of displacement and survival. Through my work, I seek to foster connection and understanding while challenging negative narratives surrounding immigration and preserving stories that might otherwise be forgotten.
