'No More Birthdays' - My work explores sustainability through the transformation of discarded textiles and domestic objects, giving materials a second life through fashion. I am interested in the idea that garments and objects carry memories, histories, and emotional value, even after they are considered unwanted or obsolete. Through reconstruction and recontextualisation, I challenge the perception of waste by redesigning materials into new wearable forms. Using second-hand textiles alongside upcycled cutlery sourced from charity shops and household collections, I experimented with unconventional construction techniques including drilling, riveting, and linking metal components by hand. The use of cutlery became symbolic of permanence and everyday ritual, transforming familiar domestic objects into sculptural, armour-like garments. By placing these objects within a fashion context, I explored how materials can shift in meaning, purpose, and value. My practice combines fashion, craftsmanship, and material innovation to question the disposable culture surrounding both clothing and household waste. Rather than allowing materials to lose relevance once their original purpose has ended, I investigate how they can be redesigned and reused in alternative contexts. The project highlights the relationship between sustainability and storytelling, showing how fashion can preserve memory while creating new narratives through reconstructed materials. Through this process, I aim to propose a more conscious and future-focused approach to design that values longevity, transformation, and creative reuse.
