MA FASHION I am a Sri Lankan fashion designer exploring how fashion can connect cultural heritage with contemporary design. My work is rooted in storytelling, using womenswear as a way to preserve tradition while reimagining it for a modern audience. Growing up in Sri Lanka and now living and studying in London has shaped both my identity and my creative practice. I am inspired by the historical and cultural relationship between the two countries, particularly the contrast between Sri Lankan craftsmanship and British tailoring. Through my collections, I reinterpret traditional dress, ceremonial garments and artisanal techniques into contemporary silhouettes that celebrate my heritage while remaining relevant to today's fashion industry. Sustainability is at the heart of everything I create. I believe in designing with purpose by embracing slow fashion, responsible production and traditional craftsmanship. I enjoy working with handmade textiles and heritage techniques, not only because of their beauty, but because they help preserve cultural knowledge that has been passed down through generations. My design process is research-led, combining historical references, material exploration and experimental garment construction to create collections that are both meaningful and innovative. My graduate collection is inspired by the coastal landscapes of Sri Lanka, family memories and the traditions that have shaped my upbringing. Through sculptural tailoring, layered silhouettes and carefully crafted surface details, I explore themes of identity, belonging and cultural connection. For me, fashion is more than clothing—it is a way of telling stories, preserving memories and creating emotional connections through design. Alongside womenswear, I have worked on collaborative projects that explore performance wear and interdisciplinary design, allowing me to translate cultural narratives into different fashion contexts. These experiences have strengthened my interest in combining heritage with contemporary innovation while continuing to develop my technical and creative skills. Through my brand, SAHANYA, I aspire to create a contemporary luxury label that celebrates Sri Lankan culture on an international stage. My ambition is to bridge cultures through fashion, champion traditional craftsmanship and contribute to a more sustainable, inclusive and globally connected fashion industry.
