Emerging designer Lily Robinson revisits the imaginative world that first shaped her creative identity. “Lulu’s Trunk Show” draws from the original packaging of the vintage Fashion Angels dolls a 2000s line of poseable fashion characters known for their mix-and-match wardrobes, expressive graphics, and distinct personalities. At the centre is Lulu, joined by Bebe, Izzy, and Debo, whose playful proportions and miniature clothing form the conceptual foundation of the collection, reinterpreted through a slow-fashion, circular womenswear lens. Robinson’s research unfolded in two strands. She produced hand-drawn observational studies of the trunk’s graphics and the dolls’ miniature garments, later refining these drawings into narrative-driven prints. Alongside this, she developed collaged garment designs, cutting and recomposing imagery from the dolls’ wardrobes to explore silhouette, proportion, and styling. These collages informed the sculptural direction of the garments, while the drawings shaped the print identity two parallel processes that built the world of Lulu’s Trunk Show. Print experimentation extended across tulle, printed linings, and multiple fabric bases, allowing illustrations to shift in scale, opacity, and texture. A dialogue between lightweight tulle and more structured fabrics creates shifting volumes and defined silhouettes. Bespoke tailoring anchors the collection through a sculptural jacket and tailored trousers that reinterpret the dolls’ proportions at life-sized scale, balancing softness with precision and craft. Sustainability underpins the project, incorporating repurposed denim donated by Robinson’s mother and grandfather, alongside deadstock tulle, sequins, and rescued fabrics a circular approach that treats materials with sentiment as well as purpose. “Lulu’s Trunk Show” celebrates the lasting influence of childhood imagination, showing how early visual worlds can evolve into a confident, craft-driven womenswear practice. Robinson transforms Lulu and her friends into a contemporary design language rooted in print, tailoring, and slow-fashion values, proving that early creative play can shape a designer’s vision long into adulthood.
