'The Long Goodbye' - My collection is a deeply personal reflection on memory, loss, and resilience, inspired by my grandmother's experience with dementia and her recent passing. Through a combination of contrasting materials, modular construction, and symbolic detailing, I explore the complex journey of cognitive decline while celebrating the strength of the person behind the illness. Central to the collection is my fascination with the juxtaposition of fabric types. Delicate chiffon is layered alongside robust materials such as tarpaulin, creating a dialogue between fragility and protection. The transparency and movement of chiffon symbolise the vulnerability of the mind as memories begin to fade, while the heavier fabrics represent permanence, structure, and the enduring aspects of identity. As the collection progresses, the presence of chiffon increases within each look, visually communicating the rapid deterioration of memory associated with dementia. The silhouettes draw inspiration from my grandmother's career in the police force, translating elements of uniform dressing into contemporary fashion. Technical outerwear features, oversized protective collars, modular components, cargo-inspired silhouettes, and functional fastenings reference the discipline, practicality, and authority associated with police uniforms. These garments are designed to transform and adapt, reflecting both the changing nature of memory and the evolving relationship between the individual and their surroundings. A recurring motif throughout the collection is the Forget-Me-Not flower, an internationally recognised symbol associated with dementia awareness and remembrance. Laser-cut into fabrics and incorporated across multiple garments, the flower serves as a tribute to my grandmother and the memories that remain despite loss. The layered construction, asymmetrical forms, and interplay of opacity and transparency further evoke the fragmented nature of recollection. Ultimately, this collection honours my grandmother's legacy, transforming personal grief into a visual narrative that explores memory, identity, and the enduring power of remembrance through contemporary fashion design.
