'Charm Offensive' - My collection is a celebration of contemporary femininity, feminist expression, and the power of women to reclaim and redefine the symbols traditionally associated with femininity. Inspired by the Riot Grrrl movement of the 1990s, this collection explores themes of female empowerment, resistance, and self-expression, highlighting issues that women continue to face today while challenging the idea that femininity should ever be restricted or diminished. Through knitwear, I investigate how clothing can become a form of protest as well as adornment. The DIY spirit of Riot Grrrl culture has heavily influenced my design process, encouraging experimentation, individuality, and the rejection of conventional expectations. Bright, unapologetic colour palettes of pinks, purples, and green are combined with distressed knit structures, exposing and celebrating the body rather than concealing it. Open ladders, cut-outs, and deconstructed surfaces challenge traditional ideas of perfection, presenting femininity as powerful, complex, and unapologetically visible. A central feature of the collection is the use of upcycled costume jewellery. Rather than functioning as a decorative accessory, jewellery becomes an integral construction material within the garments themselves. Chains, charms, pendants, beads, and trinkets are reconstructed into elaborate knitted silhouettes, creating sculptural surfaces that move and interact with the body. This process transforms discarded objects into symbols of value, resilience, and reinvention. Embroidery also plays a significant role throughout the collection, adding layers of texture, personal storytelling, and handcrafted detail. Combined with innovative knit techniques, it reinforces the collection's celebration of female creativity and craft traditions. By merging knitwear, embroidery, and upcycled jewellery, Charm Offensive embraces the contradictions of femininity: softness and strength, delicacy and rebellion, beauty and resistance. The collection ultimately serves as a visual statement of empowerment, encouraging women to occupy space boldly, express themselves freely, and challenge the limitations imposed upon them.
