Isali Nanayakkara's graduate collection, Nelumala, is rooted in identity, memory, and pays homage to her Sri Lankan heritage. It is a deeply personal and culturally rich collection that bridges traditional Sri Lankan craftsmanship and dress with contemporary Western design, celebrating heritage through a modern lens. Inspired by the lotus and water lily flowers of Sri Lanka, symbols of purity, rebirth, and spiritual awakening, the collection translates these influences through both print and colour. A palette of soft pinks, purples, warm oranges, and golden yellows reflects the delicate gradients of lotus petals while drawing inspiration from the historic Sigiriya frescoes, renowned for their vibrant colours and ethereal femininity. Nelumala explores silhouette through sari-inspired draping, voluminous forms, and sculptural shapes that reference traditional Sri Lankan garments, including the Kandyan sari, Nilame jacket, and sarong, reinterpreted within a contemporary context. Fabric selection is central to the design process, focusing on materials that create both volume and fluidity while maintaining structure, resulting in garments that are both elegant and wearable. The collection is informed by extensive research into Sri Lankan culture, traditional dress, and visual art, alongside experimentation with textile design. Original prints, inspired by the intricate patterns of Beeralu lace, were developed using screen printing and heat press techniques, bringing together traditional craftsmanship with modern textile processes. Through Nelumala, Isali explores the relationship between cultural heritage and contemporary fashion, using design as a means of storytelling. The collection celebrates Sri Lankan identity while demonstrating how tradition can be reimagined for a modern audience, creating a body of work that is both personal and timeless.
