My theme, Pelagic, derives from the term used to describe the open ocean, vast, boundless, and in constant motion. I approached this idea as both a literal and metaphorical space: an expanse where forms drift, merge, and continuously evolve. While I drew from marine life such as fish, coral formations, and underwater ecosystems, I was equally interested in how these forms could dissolve into something less defined, informed by ceramic structures and garments. A central focus of my work was translating this environment into texture and colour. The ocean’s shifting palette, deep ultramarines, muted pastels, reflective surfaces alongside its contrasting textures, from smooth shells to fragile, branching coral, informed a visual language that felt both delicate and immersive. Rather than creating purely functional pieces, I aimed to produce designs that exist as artworks, objects that evoke depth, movement, and suspension. Collage became a key method for expressing this, allowing me to layer fragments into fluid, multidimensional compositions that mirror the ocean's unpredictability. Although technically challenging, this process of trial and adjustment became integral, reflecting the same sense of fluid adaptation found within the pelagic environment.
