Charlie Loder is an experimental pattern cutter. Taking inspiration from a range of oddly shaped sources, she transforms these into unique but functional clothing designs through performance pattern cutting. She specialises in performance outerwear and uses her unusual pattern shapes to create clothing that allows the body to stretch and move more easily. Her pre-collection Cumulus began her experimentation with darts utilised to create volume within garments. Initially inspired by semi-sheer, inflated hot air balloons, she co-opted these shapes to literally expand her customers’ sphere of influence with unique bulbus garments. Her first full collection, Grebe, built upon her developing pattern cutting style; this time utilising the voluminous darted forms inspired by beach shells, to enhance joint movement in outdoor clothing. She developed a collection of garments that used strategic fullness to allow joints to bend into the space or used expansion techniques to allow the clothing to flex with the movement of the wearer. The collection is an homage to the Cornish lifestyle, inspired by items found on its beaches and built to ease and assist in the exploration of its beautiful landscapes.
