'Trich' - My project, TRICH, is inspired by my experience of living with trichotillomania, a compulsive hair-pulling condition that is frequently misunderstood and overlooked within both society and beauty culture. Through this work, I explore the emotional and physical realities of hair loss, using fashion as a tool to confront stigma and encourage greater awareness and understanding. The project investigates the complex relationship between appearance, self-image, vulnerability, and recovery, highlighting how hair can become deeply connected to identity and self-worth. The work is structured around three interconnected stages: pulling, concealment, and regrowth. Through a combination of fashion editorials, still-life imagery, written journalism, and moving image, I translate these experiences into a visual narrative that balances documentary authenticity with stylised storytelling. This approach allows me to communicate both the internal emotional impact and the external realities of living with the condition, creating space for honesty, empathy, and reflection. Collaboration is central to my practice. By working alongside hair stylists, salons, make-up artists, and hair-care professionals, I aim to bridge the gap between lived experience and industry representation. These collaborations help foster more inclusive conversations surrounding hair loss and reinforce the importance of visibility within fashion and beauty spaces. Ultimately, TRICH seeks to transform personal experience into collective understanding. Through fashion communication, I hope to create work that not only informs and educates but also empowers individuals to feel seen, represented, and supported. By bringing visibility to trichotillomania, the project advocates for a more open and compassionate dialogue surrounding hair loss, mental health, and identity.
