Heritage and Culture (Non-Design) Award Winner, GFW 2026 - 'Hunar' - My work seeks to celebrate cultural narratives that are deeply rooted in lived experience while presenting them within a contemporary fashion context. HUNAR: Crafted from Culture explores Desi maximalism as a visual language of cultural pride, abundance, and continuity. Inspired by my experience of growing up between cultures, the project examines how South Asian identity is expressed through jewellery, textiles, craftsmanship, and adornment. For me, these elements are more than aesthetic choices; they are symbols of heritage, carrying stories, traditions, and connections that have been passed down through generations. Through this work, I aim to highlight the richness and significance of these cultural practices while challenging their frequent reduction to trends or surface-level decoration. The project centres on three interconnected themes: adornment, textiles, and labour. Together, these themes reveal the relationship between material culture and identity, exploring how garments, jewellery, and handcrafted techniques preserve cultural knowledge and create a visible expression of belonging. Through editorial styling, photography, and moving image, I construct visual narratives that celebrate layering, texture, colour, and ornamentation, embracing the abundance that characterises Desi visual culture. My practice is driven by a desire to create representation that feels authentic and empowering. By combining contemporary fashion communication with traditional cultural references, I aim to create imagery that resonates with South Asian audiences while inviting wider conversations about heritage, identity, and cultural visibility. Ultimately, HUNAR is a celebration of culture as something lived, worn, and continually evolving. It reflects the beauty of South Asian craftsmanship and encourages audiences to recognise, value, and take pride in the richness of their cultural inheritance. Through fashion communication, I seek to honour the stories embedded within cultural traditions while demonstrating their relevance within modern creative practice.
