“Love arrived as rhythm before it became words.” Subin Park is a South Korean knitwear designer and textile systems developer based in London. She is currently completing an MA in Fashion at the Royal College of Art, where she has developed and continues to refine her own textile system. Her work explores how sound, memory, embodied sensation, and ritual can be translated into textile structures and garments. She collects intimate sounds and rhythms found in everyday life and the natural world-from the human voice, breath escaping the lips, and the heartbeat to her mother’s lullabies, the wind, and the rustling of leaves. She records and analyses these sounds before transforming them into symbols and translating them into a tactile textile language. Through this process, language and sound, form and colour, code and the movement of the hand cross boundaries and form new relationships. Her project NARR: Nature • Anchor • Rhythm • Ritual explores how rhythms embedded in personal memory, nature, and everyday life can create connections between people, bodies, and emotions. Its first chapter, Chapter 1: VOCAL, begins with the oldest rhythm held within her body: the rhythm of her mother’s hand gently patting her chest to lull her to sleep, her mother’s breath close by, the warmth of her hand, and the sound of her voice expressing love. These memories remain with Park as her earliest rhythm and ritual. Park approaches knitwear not simply as a material or surface, but as a language capable of holding and communicating sound, emotion, and embodied memory. She creates garments that can be read, heard, and felt. Rhythm is the fastest language of connection. I speak it-quietly, and with my hands.
