Helen Yeung is a womenswear designer whose practice explores the relationship between vulnerability, protection and transformation through material-led design. Her graduate collection, Metanoia, examines clothing as a physical record of lived experience, investigating how emotional change can be expressed through construction, texture and the body itself. Developed through an intensive process of draping, sampling and material experimentation, the collection explores the tension between fragility and strength. Helen works directly on the stand, allowing garments to evolve through making rather than predetermined sketches. This intuitive approach produces silhouettes that balance sculptural precision with fluid, body-conscious forms, creating pieces that feel simultaneously protective and exposed. Central to the collection is the use of reclaimed sofa leather, chosen not only for its sustainable qualities but for the history embedded within its surface. Existing creases, marks and softened textures become metaphors for memory, resilience and renewal, suggesting that materials, like people, carry traces of previous lives. Naturally dyed textiles, manipulated leather and hand-finished construction techniques are combined to create garments that communicate emotional complexity through touch as much as appearance. Throughout the collection, openings reveal rather than conceal, while sharp structural lines are softened through draped forms and tactile surfaces. Metal hardware references both protection and repair, creating garments that exist between armour and vulnerability. Rather than disguising imperfection, Helen embraces it as evidence of transformation, allowing wear, reconstruction and material honesty to define the visual language of the work. Inspired by mythology, psychology and the evolving relationship between body and identity, Helen's practice is rooted in craftsmanship and material sensitivity. Every design decision emerges through testing, refinement and dialogue with the material itself, resulting in garments that prioritise emotional resonance alongside technical precision. With Metanoia, Helen presents fashion as a process of continual becoming. Her work demonstrates how thoughtful construction and sensitive material exploration can transform clothing into a powerful expression of resilience, healing and contemporary femininity.
