Nina is a fashion designer whose practice explores the emotional relationship between clothing, protection and the natural environment. Her graduate collection, Shelter–Release, reimagines rainwear as both physical shelter and psychological refuge, transforming garments into spaces of comfort, resilience and quiet strength. Drawing inspiration from historical rainwear across Eastern and Western cultures, particularly traditional Chinese straw raincoats, Yanqing develops a contemporary wardrobe that balances sculptural outerwear with fluid movement. Oversized hoods, enveloping silhouettes and layered constructions create garments that simultaneously conceal and reveal the body, reflecting the changing emotions experienced during moments of uncertainty. Rain becomes both a visual language and a conceptual framework, informing every stage of the design process. Material experimentation sits at the heart of the collection. Leather, wool, pony hair and synthetic hair are manipulated to evoke the textures of rain-soaked landscapes, wet hair and changing weather conditions. Reflective surfaces and tactile fabric developments capture the shifting atmosphere of rainfall, while carefully considered construction techniques allow texture and silhouette to work together as a unified expression of protection. Working through an iterative process of draping, pattern cutting and material testing, Yanqing allows each garment to evolve through making rather than predetermined outcomes. Deep black dominates the collection, chosen for its sense of calm and emotional security, while accessories and sculptural details extend the protective qualities of the garments beyond the body itself. Rather than treating clothing simply as functional outerwear, Shelter–Release proposes fashion as a form of emotional architecture. Through sensitive material exploration and refined construction, Yanqing creates garments that offer protection without restriction, demonstrating how clothing can provide both physical shelter and psychological reassurance within contemporary fashion practice.
