Grace Cowan is a womenswear designer whose practice combines traditional craftsmanship with material experimentation to reimagine female narratives drawn from ancient mythology. Her graduate collection challenges representations of women shaped by the male gaze, creating garments that celebrate sensuality, resilience and strength through contemporary craft. Working through an intensive process of sampling, draping and hand construction, Grace builds each garment around the physical qualities of its materials. Silk, leather and metal sit alongside handcrafted chainmaille, naturally dyed textiles and raw-edge leatherwork, creating a dialogue between softness and protection. Rather than treating decoration as surface embellishment, every handcrafted detail becomes integral to the structure of the garment, allowing construction itself to communicate the collection's themes. Material development forms the foundation of Grace's practice. Extensive natural dye experiments using botanical sources establish a muted, earth-toned palette that reinforces the collection's connection to history and landscape. Leather panels are cut with organic edges and assembled using individually linked chainmaille rings, replacing conventional seams with labour-intensive handcrafted construction methods. This approach allows garments to retain the tactile qualities of the materials while celebrating the evidence of making throughout each piece. The collection moves between fluid femininity and sculptural strength, balancing delicate silk dresses with structured leather outerwear and intricate metalwork. Historical references are translated into contemporary silhouettes through draping, pattern cutting and continual refinement on the stand, producing garments that feel timeless rather than nostalgic. Grace's commitment to handcraft remains central throughout the project, with digital tools supporting development while never replacing the physical making process. Grace views fashion as both storytelling and craftsmanship. Through careful material exploration and meticulous construction, her work offers a contemporary reinterpretation of mythological women—one in which softness and strength coexist, and where garments become expressions of resilience, beauty and technical skill.
