Xinyan Lin is a womenswear and textile designer whose practice explores how material experimentation can generate both concept and form. Her graduate collection, Leave Behind, reflects on the traces people leave in our lives, examining how relationships, memories and moments of connection continue to shape us long after they have passed. Rather than beginning with a fixed narrative, Xinyan developed the collection through sustained textile experimentation. Working through repeated cycles of sampling, weaving, knotting, fringing, cord-trapping and jersey lamination, she allowed materials to guide the direction of the project. Each experiment informed the next, gradually establishing a distinctive textile language from which the collection's central ideas emerged. The resulting surfaces do not simply illustrate memory; they embody it through the physical behaviour of the materials themselves. At the centre of the collection is a series of hand-developed textiles created from trapped cord beneath stretch jersey. As the fabric is moulded and manipulated, raised organic lines emerge across the surface, producing tactile forms that suggest the subtle impressions left on the body through experience and human connection. Alongside macramé-inspired knotting, laminated fabrics and hand-finished fringing, these processes create garments that communicate through texture as much as silhouette. Xinyan approaches textile development as a form of design thinking rather than surface decoration. Every material decision evolves through making, allowing concept and construction to develop simultaneously. This process-led methodology produces garments in which textile innovation and silhouette are inseparable, with each reinforcing the emotional language of the collection. Shortlisted for the Graduate Fashion Foundation Constructed Textiles Award, Leave Behind demonstrates Xinyan's commitment to material-led design and contemporary textile craftsmanship. Her practice combines technical experimentation with sensitive storytelling, creating garments that transform fabric into a record of presence, connection and memory through the language of making itself. for the British Fashion Council audience than a conventional artist statement.
