Jinjiang He is a womenswear designer whose practice reinterprets functional clothing through material experimentation, engineered construction and contemporary silhouette. Her graduate collection, Camouflaged Rhythm, explores the relationship between military pragmatism and movement, transforming the visual language of protection into garments that balance utility with expressive design. Drawing on references including military uniforms, Scottish tartan, camouflage, Bauhaus costume design and Latin dance, the collection investigates how clothing associated with durability and concealment can be reimagined through rhythm, performance and craftsmanship. Rather than treating these references as historical quotation, Jinjiang combines them to develop a contemporary wardrobe where structure and fluidity exist in constant dialogue. Material development sits at the centre of her design process. Camouflage motifs are reconstructed through original digital print development, layering tartan structures with camouflage patterns inspired by the textures and colours of tree bark observed within the landscape. Reinforced workwear fabrics are embellished with sequins, rhinestones and engineered surface treatments, transforming symbols of protection into decorative interventions while preserving the garments' sense of function. Fringe, sculptural collars and exaggerated proportions further explore the tension between restriction and movement throughout the collection. Jinjiang develops each garment through an iterative dialogue between digital technology and physical making. CLO3D allows proportion, construction and volume to be tested before garments move into draping, pattern cutting and repeated fitting. This process enables technical refinement while maintaining an intuitive approach to silhouette development, ensuring every design evolves through continual experimentation rather than predetermined outcomes. With Camouflaged Rhythm, Jinjiang demonstrates how functional clothing can be transformed into contemporary fashion through material innovation, technical precision and thoughtful craftsmanship. Her work proposes a new visual language in which military references, dance and textile experimentation combine to create garments that are both protective and expressive.
