Womenswear designer Joshua Bart uses cutting, drape, print and technology to explore ideas of constructed beauty, referencing garments from the 1930s, when glamour masked depression. Glossing over today’s gloomy atmosphere, colourful satin sheaths conceal the wearer and are twisted, stretched and slit to forge tension and create conflict. Protective steel adornments and engineered quilting exaggerate the natural form and toy with the gap between the idealised and the real.
