My collection ‘Our Beaches’ reflects my experience of beaches growing up by the sea. The beach has always been a place of calm and relaxation for me, the sand ripples and lines created in the sand, look elegant and graceful and are calming and tranquil. On researching beaches, I was shocked to discover the amount of pollution there was in the ocean, and its impact on marine life and beaches. My collection reflects the sense of calm and relaxation of my hometown beach contrasted against the chaos and destruction of marine pollution. I used fabric manipulation techniques such as draping and trapunto quilting and created sand printed base layers to replicate the sand ripple imagery, I made the dresses tight fitted with structured bases to create a feeling of suffocation. I am a menswear designer; yet I believe that clothes shouldn’t have a gender - this collection contains dresses for men, made with lightweight fabric such as chiffon and georgette that create a graceful and elegant look.
