My work explores the West African diaspora on a wide scale, collating many components of what makes the nation and translating them through my design work – with elements and inspiration of my upbringing in London. ALKEBULAN is a beautiful word that translates to ‘mother of mankind’ - this project explores the evolution and influence of my culture in today’s modern society. West African culture has become renowned in many facets of our society and culture - informing our music, fashion, media and more. It has become more accessible through work like The Lion King: The Gift, produced by the formidable African American artist Beyonce - featuring various artists from West Africa and American musicians. Examples like these make me so proud of my community and heritage. The garments in my collection bring together the cultural and everyday aesthetic. My research around Burkinabe photographer Sanlé Sory, European and West African aesthetics informed my ideas and inspired my collection.
